The Texas Anti-Invasives Citizen Scientist Program

Speaker:

Dr. Hans Landel, Invasive Species Coordinator, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Presentation Summary:

Recognizing that battling invasives is going to take more than the available government resources, the Texas Plant and Pest Council established the Invaders of Texas citizen science program in 2005. It is designed to move the target audience beyond awareness to action on invasive species. Volunteer citizen scientists are trained to detect and report invasive species in their communities. The more trained eyes watching for invasive species, the better our chances of lessening or avoiding damage to our native landscape. In this webinar, Dr. Hans Landel will describe the program’s training, database, website, the Sentinel Pest Network early detection and rapid response (EDRR) program, and other aspects.
