A thirty year history of the Pine Mountain Legacy Project will be reviewed with emphasis on partnerships, innovation, and memorable stories. Established through the vision of several generations of Heritage/Natural Areas program staff, today the effort is led by Kentucky Natural Lands Trust, a private, nonprofit land conservation organization. This growing collaboration between five state and federal land management agencies, and several NGOs is making the 150,000-acre migratory corridor protection effort a reality. Lessons in taking advantage of changing sources of funding, champions, biodiversity hotspots, federal mitigation, state legislation, gorillas, carbon sequestration, the woolly adelgid, and some live ammunition will be included.
