Flat and shrinking budgets are eroding many organizations’ ability to manage their lands. Meanwhile, invasive, exotic plants are expanding in their New World surroundings to threaten natural and cultural resources. The NPS Mid-Atlantic Exotic Plant Management Team has created short-term volunteer programs at two park units to augment the human resources needed to manage invasives. Nonprofit sponsors provide essential support for a modicum of equipment and supplies. The Mid-Atlantic program contains four types of volunteer approaches: large general public events; scheduled group events; open weekend events (akin to pick-up basketball); and longer-term volunteer relationships. Each approach has strengths and weaknesses that are described. Similar collaborative efforts around the country are proving a boon to resource management and parks in general. Helpful pointers from those programs are also provided.
